Abstract
Vision & Goals
Our shared project vision is to empower coastal communities by collaborating and co-creating new knowledge of how existing and future climate risk models can inform equitable place-based and locally appropriate nature-based solutions (coral reefs and mangrove forests), across spatial and temporal scales, to reduce coastal hazards (coral mortalities, flood, erosion and compound effects) and support coastal sustainability.
The following eight research thrusts and overarching themes guide our activities:
- Community engaged research on Vulnerability, Climate Futures, and NBS (R0)
- Quantifying Coastal Hazards, Risk and Risk Reduction Benefits of Nature-based Solutions (R1)
- Nature-based Solutions Co-benefits (R2)
- Localized Nature-Based Solutions (R3)
- Developing decision making tools to support the implementation of nature-based solutions and other risk reduction measures with communities (R4)
- Broadening Participation (BP)
- Education (Educ)
- Evaluation (Eval)
Some goals of this workshop were to:
- Increase the research team's understanding of the aims of each Research Thrust and Theme
- Share ideas and perspectives and begin to build a common project vocabulary
- Agree upon site selection criteria and identify a short list of sites
- Improve the research team's ability to resolve conflicts
- Identify key (Year 1 & 2) dependencies, potential bottlenecks among deliverables and strategies for addressing them
- Agree upon best practices for working with communities that should become norms for the project
- Increase the research team's understanding of the project's evaluation criteria
- Identify some key data & agree upon a data management structure
- Build connections within the research team
- Capture clear next steps, roles, and responsibilities for the research team
