Abstract
On October 21st and 22nd, 2024, 58 persons gathered in Caye Caulker for a collaborative workshop, sharing knowledge on priority areas for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and co-benefits pertaining to mangroves and coral reefs. They also helped map and value fisheries supply chains, and identify socio-cultural values pertaining to NbS.
This two-part workshop was part of the Large-Scale Coastlines and People (CoPE): Strong Coasts project which studies the co-benefits of Nature-based Solutions in terms of contributions to Habitat Extent & Health, Carbon Sequestration, Education, Erosion, Fisheries, Flood Reduction, Heritage, Recreation, Tourism, and Water Quality. The workshop was organized by project partners from the University of South Florida (USF), the Natural Capital Project at Stanford University (NatCap), SeaScape Solutions and the University of Miami (UM). Project partners from Boston University, WWF MesoAmerica, and Fragments of Hope Ltd also participated. Strong Coasts CoPe Community Fellows from Placencia and students from the University of Belize’s Natural Resource Management program helped to facilitate activities, note take and manage the workshop.
This workshop and activities report continues the Strong Coasts CoPe practice of community collectively working to care for the ecosystems that are so central to health, livelihoods, and heritage along reef-lined coastlines.
