Note
The first Egmont Key Lighthouse was built in 1848 - at the time, the only lighthouse on the Gulf coast of Florida between Key West and St. Marks on Apalachee Bay. It was heavily damaged by hurricanes in September 1848 and 1852. It was reconstructed in 1858, and is the oldest structure in the Tampa Bay area still used for its original purpose. It was updated in 1944 and automated in 1990.
Egmont Key was named by surveyor George Gauld for John Perceval, second Earl of Egmont and First Lord of the Admiralty.
