Abstract
The impetus for this edited collection, Gender Equality in a Global Perspective, is an intriguing and urgent question that presents opportunities for empirical research and reflection; namely, what is gender equality and, more specifically, what is gender equality in different national contexts around the globe? By definition, the answer should be relatively straightforward given policies and statistical evidence for equal representation, treatment, expectations, inclusion and benefits for women and men in different life realms. Yet, the introductory comments and chapters about gender equality in specific countries indicate that the answer is much more complicated than the numbers and standards of compliance to global directives such as the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) would indicate. Considerations of societal norms and values, as well as policies and consequences for noncompliance, and the way people do gender equality and inequality on an everyday basis are the bases on which we, as readers, learn how and why gender equality has not progressed as far as we might imagine and hope.
