Abstract
Distinguishes unitizing reliability (consistency in identifying what is to be categorized across time and/or judges) from interpretive reliability (consistency in applying category labels) and argues that unitizing reliability is necessarily prior to and ensures good interpretive reliability. Examples from nursing research on confirming/disconfirming communication illustrate the point.
