Abstract
The relational aspects of therapeutic communication have been shown to be important determinants of successful therapeutic outcomes. There is still lacking, however, a holistic construct of communicator style which is operable in therapeutic relationships. This research presents the first in a series of investigations which seeks to establish such a construct. A rationale is provided for studying therapeutic communication in relation to a more general construct of communicator style. A definition is presented which integrates the communicator style construct with emergent concepts from the literature on therapeutic communication. Finally, two research hypotheses are tested through a comparative analysis of variable means, profiles, and configurations of general and therapeutic communicator styles. The results confirm the research hypotheses, suggest areas of refinement for the test instrument, and move closer to a complex, holistic theory of communicator style in therapeutic relationships.
