Abstract
This book chapter, part of the edited volume "The Making of Brazil's Black Mecca: Bahia Reconsidered" (2018, Michigan State University Press, edited by Scott Ickes and Bernd Reiter), analyzes the white gaze that is routinely cast upon black Bahians. Reiter argues that by projecting backwardness, spirituality, and unbound sexuality onto Black bodies in Bahia, white observers are able to claim disembodied modernity for themselves.
