Abstract

A framed plaque recognizing A. Malcolm Smith, Jr. as a member of the American Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists mounted on a stone wall. The plaque hangs in the log-and-shingle cabin that sat on the waterfront of Lake Thonotosassa at Shangri-La, a formerly USF-owned recreation area in Thonotosassa, Florida. The house was built by Smith in 1929, who named the property "Shangri-La" after the paradise of the same name in James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon.

The image features a certificate of membership awarded to A. Malcolm Smith, Jr. The text on the certificate reads: "To whom all these presents may come, Greeting. Be it known that by virtue of authority vested in them the Council has approved and accepted for membership A. Malcolm Smith, Jr. These letters being their testimonial that he is qualified in the Art and Science of Surgery of the Mouth and Associated Parts and was admitted as a Member of The American Society of Oral Surgeons and Exodontists. Seventh Annual Meeting, Nineteen Hundred Twenty-Five." It is signed by President Earle H. Thomas and Secretary Harry Bear.
