Abstract

A metal sign with a nameplate that reads, “Shangri-La” and is topped by a decorative sailboat. Trees are visible in the background. The sign stands outside of a cabin built by a dentist named Dr. Malcolm Smith in 1929, who named the property "Shangri-La" after the paradise of the same name in James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon. The cabin and its 29-acre property were donated to the University of South Florida Foundation in 1969.
