[COOPER 126] Intermediate Conversation Course with NHK NEWWEB EASY
Abstract (250 words or less in English or 500 characters or less in Japanese)
My presentation introduces ideas for an intermediate conversation course that aims at improving students’ cross-cultural interpretation and oral communication skills NHK NEWWEB EASY. I will share actual lesson plans.
The course prerequisite is JNS204 (4th semester/16 credit hours) and the course meets once a week. Every week students read two articles from NHK NEWSWEB EASY. Although students’ grammar knowledge and vocabulary are limited, they need intellectually challenging topics to discuss. Current news articles are informative and often thought provoking. Reading materials will help students to build vocabulary that is necessary for specific topics. The articles from this news site are modified for learners of Japanese and easy to use. In class I provide some grammar review and reading cues and demonstrate how to effectively describe/rephrase the information. My discussion facilitation is to have students identify questions/issues and express their ideas and thoughts in their own words. This course provides post intermediate students a stress-free class to improve their speaking skills, and it also provide study abroad returners opportunities to retain and further brush up their conversation skills. This is also a great class to invite native speakers from community as conversation partners.
