The Social Networking Approach (Tohsaku, 2013) emphasizes the importance of connecting with others as the most significant aim of second language learning in terms of one’s future success in a twenty first century global society (Tohsaku and Nakano, 2012).Thus, college education should not only improve students’ Japanese ability, but also support the creation of their learning communities. The current study was conducted to observe the students’ communication through their online portfolio (Weebly blog) during two Japanese elective courses. This study was a continuation of the study from the Development of Japanese Literacy through Online-Based Portfolio Assessment. In the previous study, the results indicated that online-based portfolios affected students' literacy development and changed relationships among classmates as they communicated through their blogs. The students were told to post about topics they have learned in class, along with visual aids to demonstrate their learning. Both courses were aimed to understand Japanese culture and literature by hands on activities and reading authentic materials. For the third semester, the students’ feedback was only in written form on their blogs; this contrasts with the previous semester when the students received oral feedback. When they communicated only through blog posts, they challenged themselves to speak to more classmates. This online communication is often held regardless of relationship strength. The fourth semester, the students’ blogs were exchanged across the culture and literature classes in order to determine whether their learning community expands through blog communication into the larger community as a Japanese learner with similar long-term goals.
