Note

This is a Roman copy of a Greek statue of the goddess Athena that would have stood on the Acropolis of Athens. Traveler Pausanias accounts that in his visit to Athens in the 2nd century CE, the statue was created by Pheidias, a master sculptor of the 5th century BCE. He also claims that its dedication was by the inhabitants of the island of Lemos. Two other authors also mention the statue by name, suggesting it was greatly admired. Athena is depicted without a helmet and wearing an aegis diagonally across her body, from one shoulder to her hip. The hairstyle is simple, the hair short and curly with a central part, without a helmet, with a simple ribbon attached at the back. The right arm is not preserved but part of the left arm is preserved, horizontal to the shoulder. The torso is covered with an Attic peplos with a belt. This type is known for multiple Roman copies or free imitations. This statue is included in the Skulpturensammlung, part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, in the Albertinum in Dresden, Germany.
