Note

The bust was discovered in 1753 during subterranean tunneling of the Villa of the Papyri, in the ancient town of Herculaneum, which was covered by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The bronze is a Roman copy dating to the 1st century BCE, cast from a lost Greek masterwork dating to the 3rd century BCE. The sculpture is noted for its 'veristic' details, like deep forehead furrows and focused expression. The particular identity of the man depicted in this bust is not known. In the past it was proposed to recognize the piece as Heraclitus, but in more recent times, it has been suggested that it is Empedocles. This object is currently housed at the National Archeological Museum of Naples, Italy.
