Note

Inscription at the base of the herm that says, "Apollonios, son of Archias, Athenian made it."
This is the herm bust of the Doryphoros, a prime example of Late Hellenistic/ Early Roman bronze sculpture. The base of the herm features an inscription that identifies its creator as Apollonios, son of Archias. This is a precise replica of the idealized head from Polykleitos' renowned 5th century BCE Doryphoros statue. This copy was excavated in 1753 from the estate known as the Villa of the Papyri in ancient Herculaneum, which was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The athlete turns his head slightly to his right, with his gaze set ahead. His eyes are almond shaped, and his lips are slightly parted. The herm base begins at the collarbone. This object is currently housed at the National Archeological Museum of Naples, Italy.
