Note

The sculpture was carved either by an unknown Hellenistic sculptor of the Pergamene school, late third or early second century BCE, or is a Roman copy of a high quality, though its current form was result of numerous restorations in Rome. A faun is the Roman equivalent of a Greek satyr, who in mythology are human-like male woodland spirits, traditionally represented with animal features. It was discovered in the moat below the Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome, in the 1620s and several copies were made. The condition of the statue was highly damaged, but has undergone numerous restorations. Due to particular reworkings, the sexual aspect of the statue maybe have been enhanced and has required a reputation as an example of erotic art. This object is currently held in the Glyptothek in Munich, Germany.
