Note
This is the funerary stele of Philion, which was carved from Pentelic marble and discovered in the Goudi district of Athens, Greece. The carving technique allows the central figures to dramatically project in high-relief. The scene depicts a traditional dexiosis, or handshake, which symbolized the bond between the living and dead or a farewell gesture. A woman is seated on a stool facing right and holds in both or her hands the hand of another woman who stands in front of her. Between these two figures, in the background, stands a mature man and a young maidservant to the left. The seated woman's head is carved in the round. This object is currently held in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
