Hieroglyphic inscriptions
One of the grand architectural marvels of Karnak is the hypostyle hall built during the Ramesside period. The hall is made of 134 sandstone columns with the center twelve columns measuring over 21 meters tall. The hall would have been painted with bright colors, some of this still remaining on the upper portions of the columns and ceiling. With the center of the space being taller than the spaces on either side, the Egyptians allowed for clerestory lighting. Not many people would have had access to this hall, since as the further one went into the temple, the more restricted the access became. On the columns are engravings of hieroglyphics. The capitals resemble closed Cyperus papyrus floral buds. Inscriptions and reliefs were included on roof beams, which were placed on top of the column without support.
