Note

This statue is a Roman sculpture of Greek mythological art reinterpreted through Roman imperial style. It is made of red porphyry and white marble. The head, arms, and lyre were originally made of bronze, but in the late 18th century, sculptor Carlo Albacini replaced them with white marble from Luni to preserve the work. The statue originally represented a female subject, the personification of Rome, before the restorer altered its features. Its provenance is unclear but it has been much restored, the head unlikely to be original and the figure was probably of Vesta before its transformation. Apollo is shown seated on a rock, adorned in a long-sleeve chiton that is fastened at the waist, with a himation draped over his shoulders. A laurel wreath sits atop his head. His left hand holds the lyre, and in his right the plectrum. The wreath and instrument were both gifts from Apollo's brother, Hermes, symbolizing music, poetry, and divine favor. Both the posture and clothing are reflective of the classical depiction of Apollo in the Temple at Delphi in the 4th century BCE. This object is part of the Farnese Collection and is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy.
