Note

This is a marble bust of a young satyr mounted on a classical pedestal base. A satyr is a mythological follower of the god Dionysus, which are characterized by curly hair and subtle animalistic or playful facial features. The mouth is slightly agape, faintly revealing the teeth to denote a mischievous, celebratory character. It was based on a Hellenistic Greek original, which was often replicated in Roman times. The original provenance of this work is not known, though it is part of the Farnese Collection at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy.
