This sculpture is attributed to the West Pediment of the Temple of Asklepios at Epidaurus. The temple was not large but it had elaborately decorated pediments featuring scenes of Amazons battling Greeks and the sack of Troy. The subject here is an Amazon rider, possibly Queen Penthesilea, wearing a cape fluttering behind her, a belted chitoniskos, and high leather boots. She is mounted atop a horse in a 3/4 view to the right. The horse rears on its hind legs, and the Amazon raises her right arm, perhaps to launch a spear at the enemy. There are many absent parts, such as her arms, head, feet, and below her shoulder. The horse is also missing a head, top of its neck, left forelegs, right front hoof, tail, and lower hind legs. Dowel holes on the neck of the horse indicate where the bridle would have been attached, likely made of metal. Due to the height of this statue, 0.9 meters, scholars determined that it was likely placed at the center of the pediment. It stands at 0.8 meters in its current condition. It was excavated between 1882-1884. This object is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.
