Note

Head of young man with blond hair, as indicated by the well-preserved traces of yellow paint on hair when found, giving it its name. It was uncovered in 1887 amidst archaeological excavations for the construction of the Old Acropolis Museum in the area of the Sanctuary of Pandion. Thick mop of hair ending in rows of curls in front, braided in back. His solemn and melancholic expression on his face reveals the new perception in sculptural art during this time called 'Severe Style' following the Persian Wars of 480 BCE. Head is tilted noticeably to the right, which corresponds with the fragment of lower torso usually associated with it. Both show elements of early classical pose with weight on left side of body. This statue head was carefully detached from its body, which has led to the assumption that its removal was deliberate. This object is currently housed in the Acropolis Museum, Athens, Greece.
