Note

The Rampin Rider or Rampin Horseman is an equestrian statue from the Greek Archaic period. It is made of marble and there are still traces are red and black paint. The rider features characteristics typical of the period, but also has several asymmetrical features that break their conventions. The statue was first thought to be part of a set of statues, possibly paired with another as a mounted presentation of Castor and Pollux, commonly seen on vases. Another theory is that this represents the winner of a race, supported by the crown of lovage, given to the winners of the Meman Games and Isthmian Games. The head of the main subject was discovered on the Acropolis of Athens in 1877 and donated to the Louvre Museum, Paris, France. Parts of the body and the horse were located ten year prior in a Perserschutt ditch filled with statues broken amidst the 480 BCE Persian sack of Athens. The head of the subject was not paired with the rest of the statue until 1936. This statue is displayed with a plaster cast of the head at the Acropolis Museum, with the original head at the Louvre with a cast of the remainer of the statue.
