Note

This is a bust of the Greek and Roman god Apollo of music, truth, and light. The style is in the Kassel type. This statue is a Roman copy of the Imperial era modeled after a Greek Classical original attributed to Phidas. There are more than twenty known versions of this type, with many other depictions on coins and gems. It depicts the god with tight, curly locks of hair and a calm, idealized facial expression typical of Classical Greek art. Discovered in 1721, it was uncovered at the ancient Villa of Domitian located near Lake Sabaudia of central Italy. This work is currently held at the Naples National Archaeological Museum, Italy.
