Note
This is the East Frieze of the Siphnian Treasury at Delphi, Greece. The subject and composition of this relief were new in archaic art, likely because they were freshly derived from the epic poems of the Trojan War. On the left is an assembly of the gods, divided by the pro-Trojan or pro-Greek loyalties, who face each other and argue the outcome of the battle in Homeric fashion. The gods are larger in scale than the mortal on the right. Within the right side of the frieze are the mortals engaged in the battle over the body of a fallen warrior. The divergence of the frieze into two world is inspired by Homer, where the division is consistently used as a narrative device, reflecting the vision of the gods and men who, by virtue of their nature, belong to separate stations of life. This work is currently held at the Delphi Archaeological Museum, Greece.
