These pieces derive from Argos in the Peloponnese, though they were discovered at Delphi. In 1893 and 1894, French archaeologists uncovered two compellingly similar kouroi while excavating the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. While they shared characteristics with other kouroi, many details differentiate these works from the genre. They are bulkier, with especially broad chests and thick limbs. Their bodies seem to recall their story that sent them to fandom, demonstrating their strength of hauling their mother's cart in the place of oxen. They are also not nude, different than a typical kouros. Since those honored by a korous were not identifiable by the carving itself, an inscription accompanied the statue on its base. The kouroi here stood on plinths, supporting bases, where these inscriptions would be located identifying the artist. This pair of works is currently held at the Delphi Archaeological Museum, Greece.
