The Varvakeion Athena is a Roman-era statue of Athena Parthenos, thought to be the most faithful reproduction of the chryselephantine statue made by Phidias, which once stood in the Parthenon. This statue is 1.05 meters tall, approximately one twelfth of the estimated height of the original. This copy is carved from Pentelic marble and has traces of red and yellow paint on its surface. Athena is adorned in a peplos decorated with snake details. She wears an Attic helmet with the cheek guards upturned. Her left hand rests on the rim of a shield, while her right hand is outstretched holding a winged figurine of Nike, though her head is missing. The name of this piece comes from the location of its discovery in 1880, amongst the ruins of a Roman house near the original site of the Varvakeion School. This object is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
