Note

The Antikythera Ephebe is a Greek bronze statue of a young man dating to circa 340-330 BCE. It was discovered in 1900 by sponge-divers in the area of the ancient Antikythera shipwreck off the island of the same name. The wreck site dated to about 70-60 BCE and yielded numerous fundamental finds for modern scholars. This statue measures 1.96 meters in height, slightly over Lifesize, but was retrieved in multiple fragments. The figure would have held a spherical object in his right hand. The left arm comes behind him, as his torso shifts to the left, even though he moves to the right, with his weight on one leg creating a stance of contrapposto. The first restoration on this piece was in the 1950s, improving its historical accuracy. The Ephebe does not correspond to any familiar iconographic models, and there are no known copies of it. This object is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
