Note

This statue depicts a young woman pulling her mantle over her shoulder as a gesture of modesty. She is in the style of Small Herculaneum Woman, which was a body-type widely used for portraits of Roman women. This is a sculptural type that was popular in the Greek Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods, often combined with individualized portrait heads, though the body remained consistent. They were likely representations of priestesses, poets, or eminent Greek women. In this particular sculpture, her face is solemn and idealized, with a 'melon coiffure' hairstyle that is swept back in separate strands that form a krobylos, rolled into a bun without a ribbon showing. Traces of color are found on the hair and clothing, indicating that this sculpture would have been painted, typical of marble statues in the Ancient World. This object is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
