This sculpture was discovered in 1911 near the Dipylon Gate in the Kerameikos district of Athens, which functioned as both a potters' quarter and major cemetery. Due to the carving's monumental size, it was most likely part of a memorial statue rather than a votive or cult image. It serves as one of the earliest examples of monumental sculpture. The Dipylon Head belongs to a collection of Archaic sculptures known as the Sunium Group, which share a distinctive style of large eyes, elongated faces, stylized features, and particular ear-shapes. The hair is tied by a ribbon and forms beaded tresses, ending in an oval shape that hangs on the nape of the figure's neck. This exemplifies the Archaic style's emphasis on idealized youth as a symbol of identity and status. The sculpture is currently held at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
