Note

This bronze sculpture was recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision, in northern Euboea, Greece. It was discovered in 1926 and further excavated in 1928, at the site of a shipwreck that occurred around the 2nd century BCE. Most scholars believe the figure to be either Zeus, king of gods, or Poseidon, god of the sea. The statue is slightly larger than Lifesize at a little over 2 meters tall, and would have held a thunderbolt or trident. The empty eye sockets were originally inset with most likely bone, the eyebrows with silver, and the lips and nipples with copper. This statue is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
