Note

This is a bronze statue of Apollo Citharoedus. It was discovered on November 8, 1853, in the peristyle of the House of the Citharist in Pompeii, Italy. The villa was subsequently named after the uncovering. The style is a classical Roman work that is crafted in an 'archaizing' or Severe Greek manner. Depicted is the god Apollo, shown in nude, featuring textured green patina skin caused by oxidation. The original inlaid glass paste eyes are uncommonly present, which gives the subject a lifelike gaze. The moniker 'Citharoedus' signified Apollo as the god of music playing the cithara, an ancient Greek lyre. The instrument is absent, but there are indication of it on the remains.
