Note

This Ancient Greek bronze sculpture of a naked male youth with arms raised stands at 128 cm, or slightly smaller than life. It was initially missing arms and legs when it was unearthed in the late 15th century amidst the construction of city walls on the Greek island of Rhodes. The object was then transported to Venice, Italy in 1503. The left leg was recovered and reunited with the head and torso in the 16th century. This statue has been through a number of different collections until it was sold in 1747, where it was displayed on a terrace of a palace until 1786, when it was moved to Berlin Stadt Schloss. Following this, it was removed by Napoleon in 1806 and displayed at his museum in Paris. It was purchased and donated to the collection of the Altes Museum. Here, it was removed by Soviet authorities to Saint Petersburg after the Second World War, but then returned to the museum in East Berlin in 1958 with other antiquities.
