Note

This sculpture made of marble depicts a full-length male figure, a satyr, carrying a young Greek god Dionysus on his shoulders. Satyrs were nature spirits that were part human and part animal that were characterized by their playfulness, love of music, dancing, and wine. Myth tells that Dionysus was raised in the forest by nymphs and satyrs after being born. They are typically seen together and these therians accompanied Dionysus in his thiasos as companions. In this scene, the satyr's carrying of the child indicates the nurturing and protective position that they played in the early life of Dionysus, as well as the symbolic link between wine, music, and nature that encapsulates Dionysian culture.
