Note

This monument near the Acropolis of Athens was erected by the choregos Lysicrates to commemorate the prize of the boys' dithyramb content in the City of Dionysia. This is known as the first use of a Corinthian order on the exterior of a building. The structure has been reproduced widely in modern monuments. It stands 10 meters tall with 6 engaged Corinthian columns. The frieze on the top depicts the myth of Dionysus transforming Tyrrhenian pirates into dolphins after the attempted abduction of the god, likely inspired by the Homeric Hymn of Dionysus. As part of the choragic system in Athens, victory monuments displayed prizes for dramatic competitions.
