Qubit (Cuban science fiction magazine)

Qubit (Cuban science fiction magazine)

Qubit is an online magazine, or e-zine, which emerged in February of 2005, and is freely distributed, published monthly, and sent by email to a list of subscribers who are in general Cuban authors or Cuban fans of science fiction and fantasy. It consists of articles specializing in this genre, stories, accounts and fragments of novels, including sections dedicated to the history of science fiction film with a thematic emphasis on cyberpunk. In the beginning it was directed at the Cuban public, the majority of whom do not have the equipment to surf the Internet; Qubit served as a type of recycler of online material with a desire to help authors, above all, stay current with literary and scientific information beyond the walls and limitations of the island.

Qubit’s development can be divided in three stages. The first stage (February, 2005-December 2006) can be considered largely cyberpunk, specializing in works of literature and articles on this genre’s philosophy with a special issue dedicated to its parent publication, Steampunk. The second stage (January 2007-2009) was dedicated to researching literary cyberpunk publications as well as the science fiction in general that was then being created in the Spanish speaking countries of Latin America, including an issue dedicated to Brazil. As a result of this research, an anthology of short stories was created with the same title as the magazine, Qubit, which will be published by Casa de la Americas, one of the most prestigious publishing houses in Cuba. The magazine ceased publication during a sabbatical year in 2009 and returned in February of 2010. In the present third stage, it has a more heterogeneous focus in its themes. It will also, however, have a series of special issues that include, for example, the fantastic in Cuba, the prehistory of Cuban science fiction, and the history of science fiction written by women in Cuba. It may also widen its coverage with the inclusion of three issues dedicated to speculative poetry.-- Raúl Aguiar, Qubit editor
