Abstract
Chapter Abstract
The book ties the thematic threads of the chapters together with an analysis of the words of passion in Behn’s complete oeuvre. In addition to love, the word that ties the book together, Behn’s literary works explore more negative than positive passions with a focus on nervous states of apprehension, fear, doubt and sometimes hope. She also showcases violent, dangerous and extreme passions, hate, revenge and rage. The concordance data reveals, however, that Behn’s passions operate within a moral universe of Christian values where sin and guilt shadow behaviors stimulated by passion. What emerges from this full-length study of Behn’s words is her unique contribution to amatory literature in the form of a sophisticated language of the body in a discourse that prefigures the psychological interiority of the later novel.
