Abstract
Discusses clinical guidelines for the assessment of fitness level and prescription of exercise tasks, with special emphasis on the role of psychologists and other mental health professionals. Psycholgists working in the areas of behavioral medicine and behavior therapy predict that exercise will be used more extensively in the coming years for treating a variety of behaviorally based physical and mental health disorders such as depression, obesity, and anxiety. It is proposed that a safe, efficient, and appropriate exercise program can be prescribed for the great majority of individuals by mental health professionals trained in exercise testing.
