Abstract
For decades, system designers and system operators have struggled with automation. System designers predict decreased workload, increased precision, and better system performance. System operators work with imperfect automation, system failures, and automation-induced accidents. Yet, we rely on automation to regulate the temperature of our house, make our coffee, back up our computers, and do the menial work of our daily lives. Somehow, the automation improves and the promises are fulfilled.
