Abstract

Comments on the article by L. L. Martin (see record 1999-01565-001) on the I-D compensation theory. The authors focus on terror management and social motivation. They state that although I-D compensation theory emphasizes the impact of frustrated goal striving in the production of future- and self- oriented thought, and terror management theory views such thought as adaptive components of the human self-regulatory system that separate us from other animals, they both link this intellectual activity to the genesis of many basic social motives.
