Abstract

Photograph of Dr. Patrick Parker (of the University of Texas - Marine Science Institute) standing amid abundant vegetation on one of the cays in the Miskito Cays, Nicaragua. A cay is a small, low elevation island which forms on a reef. Dr. Parker, along with Dr. John C. Ogden (of Fairleigh Dickinson University - West Indies Laboratory) and their colleagues conducted a plant and animal survey and collection on this cay. They found coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), grasses, low bushes, migrant warbler birds, small lizards, rats, egrets, frogs, and a variety of insects. This photograph was taken near the Miskito Cays, Nicaragua during the research expedition of Dr. John C. Ogden and his colleagues to Miskito Bank, Nicaragua aboard the R/V [Research Vessel] Alpha Helix from October 13, 1977 to November 18, 1977 where their research included studies on seagrasses, fish, sea urchins, and the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas).
