Tracking the Buffaloes of the Coral Reef - A Mission in Hydrolab [written report]

A type-written draft of a paper titled "Tracking the Buffaloes of the Coral Reef - A Mission in Hydrolab- John and Nancy Ogden". Several revision and editing notes are written in pencil on the draft report. The paper is a scientific and narrative description of John and Nancy Ogden (and their colleagues)'s November 1981 research project studying the foraging behavior of Rainbow Parrotfish (Scarus guacamia) in the Salt River submarine canyon off the coast of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The project was a collaboration with several colleagues, including Dr. Clarendon Bowman of the University of Miami Medical School, Dr. Phil Lobel of Harvard University, Dr. John Randall of the Bernice Bishop Museum in Hawaii, and Dr. Ileana Clavijo of the University of Puerto Rico. The research team lived and worked in Hydrolab, an underwater laboratory located on the seafloor which allowed scientists to live and work underwater for extended periods of time. At the time of the research project Hydrolab was located at a depth of approximately 50 feet in Salt River submarine canyon, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Documents collected by Dr. John C. Ogden related to his (and his colleague)'s November 1981 scientific research project at Hydrolab, an underwater laboratory located on the seafloor which allowed scientists to live and work underwater for extended periods of time. At the time of the research project, Hydrolab was located at a depth of approximately 50 feet in Salt River submarine canyon, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Materials included in this section of the binder include project planning documents, personnel lists, aquanaut excursion logs, an abstract for a scientific paper titled "Foraging Behavior of the Rainbow Parrotfish (Scarus guacamia)" by John C. Ogden, daily narrative logs, sketches of fish, a table of sunrise and sunset times at San Juan, Puerto Rico, instructions for the use of a USR-5 digital receiver, a marine flora survey report by Nancy Ogden, and fish ultrasonic tracking data sheets.
