Abstract
Oral history interview with charter boat captain Tristram "Tris" Colket. Colket began fishing out of Fort Pierce in 1971 and worked as a commercial fisherman until 2003 when he began charter boat fishing. Oculina Bank was a good place to grouper fish, and Colket would fish there if it were legal, but he has been able to work around the closure. If he has an unsuccessful charter, he feels even more disappointed than the customer, and fishing Oculina Bank increased the chances of catching something. Colket supports the anchoring ban, which protects the coral, and was not opposed to expanding the area, although it was inconvenient to him. He does question how effectively the ban is enforced. He supports regular quotas limiting the number of fish per person or boat, but thinks that individual transference quotas or ITQs make things more difficult for independent fishermen. In this interview, Colket also describes some of his fishing techniques and recounts some memorable stories, including two encounters with the Coast Guard.
