Abstract
Undergraduate enrollment at USF boomed in the mid-1960s. The young Tampa campus could not handle the influx of students. Under President John S. Allen, the University of South Florida took possession of the Bayboro facility on 1 July 1965. A few months later, classes began for students who stayed in the old Maritime Service barracks and enrolled in classes here or at USF's home in Tampa. Allen established a presence at St. Petersburg without receiving permission from the Florida Board of Regents. As new residential facilities opened in Tampa, the future of the Bay Campus site became uncertain.
