"As emergency/hazards management has professionalized, the need for higher education opportunities is ever-increasing. In order to address issues surrounding higher education opportunities for emergency/hazards managers, this workshop was convened on October 22-24, 2003, by the Natural Hazard Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Colorado at Denver in partnership with the FEMA Higher Education Project with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Fifty-five leaders from the hazards community addressed issues surrounding educational needs."

"A series of tornadoes killed at least 605 persons in the districts of Jamalpur and Tangail in Bangladesh on the evening of 13 May 1996. The objective of this study is to understand the reason why so many fatalities occurred from the tornadoes. Bangladesh, one of the developing countries in Asia, has very different natural and human environments from developed countries like the United States. Those differences are considered key to understanding the current research question.

"Field surveys were made one week after tornadoes killed 40 persons and injured over 300 in rural regions of Alabama and Georgia USA on 27 March 1994. Surveys were completed for samples of persons killed and persons in the paths of the tornadoes but survived to determine whether there were differences in personal characteristics, behavior, or location between the two groups."
