Equatorial Waves During Gate And Their Relation To The Mean Zonal Circulation

Abstract
Velocity data from the PASSAT GATE moorings at 10°W on the equator and 1 S are analyzed for meridional and vertical structure, and compared with simultaneous data from the TRIDENT equatorial moorings at 26°W and 28°11′W. Evidence for westward propagating equatorially trapped waves at time scales of 32, 16, and 3-5 days is discussed. The time scales, energy levels, and structures of these oscillations all appear to be related to the strong mean circulation. The oscillations were zonally coherent over at least 2000 km at the common 200 m level showing that the equator, augmented by the mean currents, can be a very effective waveguide.
