Abstract
Co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders present major challenges to the healthcare system and to nursing. According to 1999 data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 7 million-10 million Americans have at least one mental disorder as well as an alcohol or drug use disorder.
