Abstract
An oral history with Carroll West, a gay man. West spoke about growing up in a political family in Wisconsin and his military career with a drug-sniffing dog after college. They spoke about coming to Tampa to attend the University of South Florida and the housing discrimination they experienced with their partner in Tampa and Temple Terrace and the lack of a large, open gay community in Tampa in the 1980s. They talked about the crime in Ybor City and how unsafe a neighborhood it was with the Columbia Restaurant at one end and El Goya drag bar at the other. They mentioned several mutual aid society buildings that closed or were neglected including ones such as the Centro Asturiano de Tampa, Círculo Cubano, and Centro Español de Tampa, and how Ybor City has been revitalized over the years.
