Abstract
An oral history with William J. Kanouff, a gay man. Kanouff spoke about their childhood as one of ten children on a farm in upstate New York. They talked of being forced out of a Lutheran seminary in New York City due to loss of a scholarship and "quiet ostracization" after being caught with a man. They spoke of being diagnosed with HIV. Kanouff talked about their various jobs including operating restaurants in New York City, owning a leather shop, and opening a gay bookstore in Tampa, Florida. They spend a good portion of the interview on the leather community in Tampa. They also talked about caring for their partner as they died of AIDS and the resulting battle with their partner's family. Kanouff spoke on being involved in Tampa Pride and a gay and lesbian film festival.
