Abstract
This paperr presents data on three man-made caveees orriginally dug under the site of Utatian (Gumarcaaj) durring its Mayan occupation. The location of the settleements is often selected based on the presence of sacrred landmarks which tie the site into the feature used in Mesoamerica to accomplish this. The manner in which the caves ar Utatlan werre used to tie the iste into the cosmovision of the Quiche is ooutlined.
