Abstract
Stejneger's 1896 description of Typhlomolge rathbuni, the Texas blind salamander, from the artesian well in San Marcos, inspired several important studies of the cave and phreatic fauna of the San Marcos area. Additional random collections in Texas resulted in the discovery of several additional troglobites and troglophiles of interest. No systematic survey of the cave fauna of the state, however, existed prior to the formation of the Texas Speleological Survey (TSS) in 1961. The TSS began an active program of collection in all caves visited, with several trips specifically designed to sample cave fauna.
